Soprano Lilian Farahani performs in opera, Lied, oratorio and musical theater. She strives for theatrical expression in music and has a great affinity for acting.

Dutch-Iranian soprano Lilian Farahani studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (bachelor cum laude with distinction ‘for the great talent as a singer and as a stage performer’) and at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, graduating cum laude from the Dutch National Opera Academy in 2015. She received her first singing lessons from Marjan Kuiper and continued her studies with Sasja Hunnego at the conservatories; currently she is coached by Ira Siff and Hans Pieter Herman. She participated in master classes with Margreet Honig, Miranda van Kralingen, Dany Zonewa, Lynne Dawson, Dennis O'Neill, Raúl Giménez and Abbie Furmansky.

During the season 2019/2020, Lilian will sing Pamina (Zauberflöte) with Opera Zuid, Susanna (Le nozze di Figaro) in Nancy and 1st Nymph (Rusalka) at Dutch National Opera. Recently, she sang the role of Papagena in ‘Die Zauberflöte’ in the direction of Simon McBurney, both at the Dutch National Opera and at Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. Furthermore, she sang Gretel in 'Hänsel und Gretel' at Aalto-Musiktheater Essen.

In the soloist ensemble of Konzert Theater Bern, Lilian sang the roles of Pamina in ‘Die Zauberflöte für Kinder’, Kitty in ‘Anna Karenina’ by JenÅ‘ Hubay, Mrs. Gobineau in ‘The Medium’ by Menotti and Frasquita in ‘Carmen’. She also performed the role of Carolina in ‘Il matrimonio segreto’ at l’Opéra National de Lorraine, Nancy; earlier, she sang the same role in a co-production of Dutch National Opera, Dutch National Touring Opera and Opera Zuid. Furthermore, she performed roles as Despina in Mozart's ‘Così fan tutte’, Zerlina in ‘Don Giovanni’, and Susanna and Barbarina in ‘Le nozze di Figaro’.

Lilian worked with stage directors such as Simon McBurney, Lotte de Beer, Monique Wagemakers, Laurent Pelly and Cordula Däuper, with conductors such as Raphaël Pichon, Antony Hermus, Ed Spanjaard, Patrick Fournillier, Kenneth Montgomery, Antonello Manacorda and Sacha Goetzel, and with orchestras like The Hague Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Ensemble Pygmalion, the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Essener Philharmoniker, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra and members of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.

Besides opera, operette and the classical repertoire of Lieder, Lilian feels at home singing contemporary works. In the spring of 2019, her debut CD ‘Woman - the making of…’ with works of Jake Heggie, has been released, along with pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren. She sang the role of Anne Frank in the opera ‘Anne and Zef’ by Monique Krüs, directed by Corina van Eijk (world premiere), the Dutch premieres of the opera ‘Death Knocks’ (Christian Jost) in the role of Death, and of the cycle 'Eve Song’ (Jake Heggie). With the Dutch National Theater, she performed in ‘The infernal comedy’ by Michael Sturminger, directed by Theu Boermans.
